I am a weaver, dyer and writer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. My weaving practice is focused on the imaginative possibilities inherent to formal restriction.
Beginning with the basic structure of loom weaving’s intersecting warp and weft threads, I work within and often subvert this form through controlled and uncontrolled dye placement, irregular threadings and floats, and the interplay of multiple layers of weaving. I primarily use natural dye in my work as both a material and a source of inspiration; like the practice of handweaving, obtaining color from plant and other natural sources is demanding and slow, often requiring multiple chemical processes to extract and bind to fiber. The result, however, is varied, nuanced, luminous, and sometimes mysterious.
I am interested in how formal limitations such as these, challenging to work within and push against, can offer freedom from the illusion of control and ownership, summoning a deeper imagining than what appears on the surface to be possible.
